Why Affirmations Fail

November 22nd, 2006

Success with affirmations goes hand in hand with what you believe as much, or more so than the words you repeat to yourself. If you don’t believe what you are affirming to yourself over and over again you may even get the opposite of what you wish for as the affirmation only serves to enforce what you do actually believe. This is why affirmations fail. For example if you repeat to yourself “I am rich” and as you say it your conscious mind is saying “wait a minute, I’m not rich and I don’t believe this affirmation” your subconscious mind will follow the dominant belief of you conscious mind and you will remain “not rich”. Not believing your own words is the main reason why affirmations fail. So is there a way to start making affirmations work for me instead of against me? Yes, there is.

When contemplating why affirmations fail it is important when composing affirmations for yourself that they feel right for you. I have read a heap of material on affirmations over the years and many sample affirmations. The problem I often find with other peoples affirmations and one of the reasons why affirmations fail is that they are written using words I either don’t regularly use or they have no emotional impact on me personally. Although they may be ideal for the person who wrote them they wouldn’t make any real impression on me since I don’t talk in that way and this can be a factor in why affirmations don’t work. For example; “the almighty power of my being wells up within me the ability to bring forth abundance and prosperity into my reality”. This is an example of what would not work for me and why affirmations fail so often. Why? It is too wordy, too long and just doesn’t sound right. I wouldn’t talk in this fashion so my subconscious wouldn’t respond to this affirmation no matter how long I repeated it for. This is one of the main reasons why affirmations don’t work for so many people than they work, they try and use other people’s words that have no effect on their own set of beliefs.

If I wanted to attract abundance or prosperity I would more likely use a simple affirmation like “abundance flows to me easily and effortlessly”. If it was money I wanted to attract I would say something like “I am a money magnet”. I really like this affirmation as it is simple and has just two parts to it “I am” and “money magnet”. If your conscious mind was still having trouble accepting this affirmation by still believing, YOU are not a money magnet, I would just say the words “money magnet” over and over again, this is one way of avoiding the pitfalls of why affirmations fail. This way there is no mental conflict within, you are just saying “money magnet”. When there is no mental conflict from your conscious mind it is much easier to impress your subconscious mind.

I love the word “success”. It can be used in all areas of life. You can have success in love, friendship, finance, sport, careers and in everything you do. It is such a versatile word and conjures up positive feelings in me every time I hear it. This is why I wanted it in the domain name for my website. I was so happy when I was approved with the name Universe of Success as it represents exactly what I am trying to convey with this site. I think one of the reasons this word has had such an impact on my life is because I used the word “success” on its own as an affirmation for many years. I still use it as an affirmation today, I just repeat the word to myself and often I catch myself doing it subconsciously. By simply repeating a word which has a powerful or emotional effect on you can often be more effective than repeating a sentence that your conscious mind might have trouble believing. You will find the reason why affirmations don’t work for some people is because they use words that have no emotional resonance with them.

These single word affirmations are referred to as power words and if you are having trouble regarding why affirmations don’t work for you, they are a great substitute. After regularly repeating a power word of your choice you will probably find over time that your conscious mind will come to accept the new ideas and direction your life is taking from the result of using this power word. From this point you can become more specific with your affirmations and start putting those power words into sentences expressing what it is you want to manifest in your life.

Whatever it is you want to be good at in life, whether it be in your career, relationships, sports or anything else, repetition plays a big part. Not repeating your affirmation enough is another reason why affirmations fail. The more you repeat or practice the better you will get. The repetition of affirmations or power words can have a tremendous impact on your life but the most important thing to remember is it must feel right. If what you are saying to yourself doesn’t feel right it is not going to have a positive effect on your life. Instead, choose what feels right for you and repeat, repeat, repeat.

I love this post! I had never heard or thought of using power words. Your subconscious needs to believe what the conscious mind is telling it, in order to make it a reality.
