Traffic Geyser
December 1st, 2006If you want a traffic geyser erupting on your website or blog, meaning you want a sudden increase in internet traffic to your website, you need to write, write and then write some more. I’m sure there are tons of ways to bring more traffic to your website in the short term but if you are in this for the long term and want to have a quality website or blog that not only makes you money but offers original and valuable content to your readers, writing good interesting stuff will get you there and keep you there. Keywords might bring you the occasional spike in traffic but if your content is rich in keywords but poor in quality you will most likely never see that web surfer ever again. When I am looking for quality information online I tend to remember the good sites but can usually tell immediately when I find content only written for the purposes of drawing traffic and I never return.
My website has only been up and running for about 3 months so it is only a baby and I don’t proclaim to be an expert blogger but already I have had some mini spikes in my traffic from certain articles I have written. I understand a little about search engine optimization and agree that where you place your Google Adsense or whatever ads you use on your website is of critical importance in regards to having the best possible click through rate but I know what I like when I visit another website and that is valuable content. It’s the content that draws me back again and again and if I see an ad on that site that interests me I might click on it. I’ve read a bunch of times online that other bloggers don’t click on ads, that’s complete nonsense, we are no different to the rest of the millions surfing the net, we are all looking for the same thing and that is quality. It is quality that makes you go back and buy the same make of car, watch, tennis racquet or return to the same blog where you have found quality before.
There is every chance that Google and other huge search engines and advertising companies will keep changing the rules on search engine optimization and keywords. So if you have written purely with the intention to draw as many clicks as possible and not for quality and to encourage return visitors this could be detrimental to your long term results. However, no matter what the rules are or how they continue to change, quality is quality and there will never be a shortage of people looking for it as long as the internet continues to function.

You are correct. Quality content makes your site valuable and valuable content gets linked to by other sites. This is much more important in the long run.
This provides both direct links from other sites and also improves your search engine ranking which in turn means more traffic.
Two of my best articles are still very popular with search engines only because they’ve been linked many times by other sites and this improves the SE ranking. But they were popular only because of the value in their content.
