The Deafening Sound of Silence

February 21st, 2007

When we think about sound we usually dont associate silence with having a sound, well at least I didnt. Sounds as we know can come from anywhere and everywhere and often sounds are the result of just background noise. Background noise is what I refer to as the sounds of a busy world or the sound of motion. The busy world sound is that hum you would typically hear in the middle of a city, on a construction site or at a convention filled with people. Although I always previously thought that silence, complete silence I mean, was devoid of any sound, now I believe true silence can in fact be deafening.

I lived in Sydney for many years before I moved to my current home in Bangkok, Thailand about 2 years ago. For most of the time while I was living in Sydney I lived at Bondi Beach which is a beautiful beachside suburb but is only about 15 minutes drive by car to the centre of Sydney City. For those of you that dont know Sydney City, that is where you would find the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the famous Sydney Opera House and of course Sydney City is the biggest and most populated city in Australia. So what I am getting at is that although the center of Sydney City is about 15 minutes away from Bondi Beach, you can still always hear the “hum” of the city from where I lived. Also, Bondi Beach is a very lively little community unto itself and not exactly the type of place you would call quiet. I cannot recall ever hearing the deafening sound of silence while living in Sydney but perhaps on the odd occasion I did but it never lasted long enough for me to notice or recognize it.

Just before I moved to Thailand, I went to stay at my parents house a couple of hours north of Sydney for the week before my flight. I didn’t grow up in that house, my parents moved there after I had left home after finishing school but I had stayed there for a night here and there when I was in town on previous occasions. My parents live right alongside a lake that is surrounded by trees and a huge valley. It is very quiet there all the time except for the occasional sound of a speed boat or water skiers on the lake. I think this is where I first really became aware of the deafening sound of silence.

After waking up in my parents house on a few consecutive mornings, all I could hear was this piercing sound that seemed to stay at the same pitch and just continue ringing in my ears. It would only stop the moment I heard some other noise like my mother in the kitchen making breakfast or the sound of an early morning boat zooming past the house. It was no big deal but I just could not seem to make out what it was. After a week staying there I flew to Thailand and have spent the majority of my time since living in Bangkok, except for the occaisional trip within South East Asia. In Bangkok the hum of background noise is much louder than it is in Sydney by a long shot.

Last week I was in the gym training one of my personal training clients who, like me, is spiritually inclined and very interested in all topics related to personal development. We some how got onto the topic of vibration and agreed that one of the best ways to increase your vibration is to escape into nature. I have always found that when I am feeling a bit stressed, if I take a bushwalk or a trip into the forest and simply walk around for an hour or so, it quickly recharges my batteries and I immediately start to feel better. This is directly related to a raise in my vibration. The better you feel from within, the higher the vibration you will emit and this has the effect of drawing positive people, events and thoughts into your life.

It was during this conversation that my client and friend mentioned the deafening sound of silence and how when you are in a place that is so quiet all your can hear is the super high vibrating and deafening sound of silence. It is the extremely high vibration that most of us are not used to hearing that actually sounds deafening. So spending time in a place where all you can hear is this super high frequency pitch is in my opinion a great way to give yourself a quick boost of spiritual energy and raise your vibration at the same time.

It is a bit far to travel all the way back to my parents place in Australia for the weekend but I am sure going to look for a quiet sanctuary outside Bangkok in the very near future and start spending some quality time looking for that delightful deafening sound of silence.

Rock on my friend! I would like to recall that famous Simon and Garfunkel hit, “The sounds of Silence”…one of the verses go:

      Hello darkness, my old friend,
Ive come to talk with you again,
      Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
      Still remains
      Within the sound of silence.

      and

And in the naked light I saw
      Ten thousand people, maybe more.
      People talking without speaking,
      People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
      And no one deared
      Disturb the sound of silence.

They were definitely onto something! There is no such thing as true silence the same way there is no such thing as true darkness. The high pitched sound that rings in our ears in but a portion of the divine matrix that is out there connecting all of existence…also called the Zero Point Field… One thing I do notice is that the more you focus on that sound in your everyday lives the higher it seems to go!

      Cheers

And all this time I thought I was getting deaf… thanks for clearing this up for me, it’s of great value to understand this high pitch sound that we are not used to, and can sometimes deprive us from our sleep.
