The Best Way To Burn Fat
December 8th, 2006As a personal trainer one of the most common questions I get asked is what is the best way to burn fat? The truth is there are a number of very effective ways to burn fat but if I was to suggest the single best way to burn fat it would be to perform such a simple task that you may not believe it would work, that is of course, until you tried it. The easy answer to this question lies in a basic understanding of how the body processes food and what happens after you go to bed at night.
Immediately after you eat a meal and over the next few hours after that meal has been consumed you have a ready supply of energy and it is the energy from the food that your body uses as its first choice of a fuel supply for any activities you perform. If you are trying to burn fat, exercising directly after a meal is therefore not the best time to burn fat. So it makes sense to say that the best way to burn fat at the most effective time would be to exercise when your body has a minimal amount of food energy in its system or none at all.
Without a doubt the best way to burn fat is to exercise first thing in the morning after you wake up and before eating. The reason this is the best way to burn fat is this is when your body has it lowest level of blood sugar than at any other time in the day due to the fact that you haven’t eaten since the day before. Exercising at this time is not only the best way to burn fat, it is so effective that you will burn fat at twice the rate than you would in the afternoon or evening. It usually takes most people about 10 to 15 minutes of continuous exercise to get their heart rate to a necessary level to start using fat for energy but once at the increased heart rate your body instantly starts going into fat burning mode. When I say increased heart rate I do not mean that of an Olympic sprinter I simply mean at an increased rate due to simply walking at a brisk pace, I do not mean running, you do not have to get your heart rate to the rate it would be at from running. In fact, walking is better than running in an effort to burn fat as the body uses fat as its energy source when the blood sugar levels are low and the heart rate is only marginally elevated, making walking one of the best ways to burn fat. The body will tend to burn muscle as an energy source when the heart rate is elevated from a high impact aerobic exercise like running. This is because high impact exercise needs a better quality energy source than fat can provide so the body uses amino acid rich muscle tissue as the better quality source of fuel.
Like I mentioned earlier there are many ways to burn fat and although exercising early morning is the best way to burn fat it is not the only time you can burn fat through exercise but if you had limited time to exercise in your busy schedule but were able to make time early morning, brisk walking at this time of the day is the best way to burn fat as it will give you the best results. I have personally witnessed many people over the years that have achieved great success in losing significant amounts of body fat from walking for just one hour after waking each day or as often as possible and doing so without much change to their diet.
All in all the best way to burn fat in the shortest possible time is a mixture of regular exercise and a quality diet. When you get to your ideal bodyweight you can play around with your diet a little and still splurge every now and then on your favorite foods.
