Taking Chances

June 7th, 2007

We all get to certain points in our lives where we have to make an important decision on whether taking chances are our best course of action or staying where we are. Often the main determining factor when we consider taking chances is fear and this fear can be the very reason why we stay where we are even if we are not entirely happy. The ironic thing is that if we are accessing our lives at any given time due to feelings of discontent we may decide to stay where we are but in actual fact taking a chance is exactly what we need to do otherwise those feelings of discontent probably would never have come up.

Taking chances can de a daunting task and a monumental risk in some cases but look at what your options are. If you are downright unhappy, taking chances are really your only true option. Where the problem lies is in our habitual thoughts, we become secure in the same old place in an odd kind of way even if we feel unhappy. The idea of taking a chance might seem exciting and many people often dream of a better life but cease to act by taking chances which may lead to that dream becoming a reality.

The thing you need to ask yourself if you are feeling discontent and pondering the idea of taking a chance, is how bad could it really be if you decided upon taking a chance. Ok, taking chances has the possibility of failing but if you are already feeling discontent and unhappy you have already failed havent you? So are taking the chance really that big of a deal?

Many successful people not only take chances all the time but it is taking chances that keeps them feeling alive and they often look for new chances to take whenever an opportunity presents itself. Staying in an incompatible or unhappy relationship, or continuing to turn up to work each day to a job that makes you feel miserable are classic examples of living a life of denial. If you are living amongst situations like these you will probably find that taking chances are the only real option you have got if you want to move away from these depressing circumstances and onward to a bold and exciting new chapter in your life.

If you look back over the course of human history the only reason I am sitting here today and writing on this incredible piece of equipment called a computer with a roof over my head and with electricity at my disposal is because people through the course of history have been taking chances. If no body had ever decided to take a chance I would probably be sitting in a cave right now wondering where and how I am going to be able to hunt down and kill something to eat. That might seem a bit barbaric although this is exactly where we would still be without individuals before me and you taking chances.

Taking a risk is one of the most exciting and vibrant aspects of being alive. Would you rather spend your days repeating the same actions you perform day after day, year after year or would you rather do something you have never done before today? Don’t be afraid of taking steps in a new direction especially if you have been heading no where in the past. It is the risks you take in life that give your life meaning and satisfaction. Continuing in the same safe direction will not only make you stale but as you get older and look back at all the potential opportunities you had but passed up you may become imprisoned with regret.

It is ok to play it safe some of the time but taking risks is something that fills you with empowerment and provides you with wisdom on your journey through life. What we regret most in life are the chances we never took.
