Self Hate

September 22nd, 2007

Of all the problems we face in the modern world today, self hate is the biggest of them all without question. Almost every person or perhaps every single person who has ever lived either does or has suffered from feelings of self hate. If you have ever judged, ridiculed, disrespected or abused another person you have suffered from self hate. I have never liked the word, hate, and I don’t use it lightly but hate is responsible for the dark and fearful side of our emotions and our personality.

What ever we feel on the inside is what we will project on the outside and when ever we negatively judge another person or a situation we are simply projecting our own self hate. So you might be thinking to yourself, what about the people we see as evil, the kinds of people who hurt others, shouldn’t we have the right to judge them? The answer is no. We don’t know what these people have gone through to be what they are today, perhaps they may seem evil but how do we know we would not act the same way that they act if we had been through what they have endured. It’s so easy to judge other people and say things like, nothing would ever make me do what they did. We are all unique and the reason for this is because we have all been through completely different sets of experiences and for this reason we will never truly understand what motivates another person the act the way they do.

I am not saying that these people who we may perceive as evil should be able to get away with harming others or inflicting pain but the laws of the universe will give them, you and me what we each deserve. I guess you could call it karma. Since karma can take some time to come back to us, it may seem like certain people get away with heinous crimes but in this universe we live in, we will always get what we deserve eventually, I believe there are no exceptions to this.

People who lose their temper are classic examples of those who are overflowing with self hate. Losing your temper is an example of blaming something outside of your self for the problem that seems to be facing you. In actual fact, any person or situation that you encounter in life has come from a projection from within yourself so losing your temper is nothing else but self hate.

I once worked in a sales job years ago and one of the salesmen I worked with was always losing his temper over anything and everything. His personal life was a mess, he was an alcoholic and he hated virtually everyone and everything around him and was not afraid to tell people about the way he felt. The thing was though that he never took any responsibility for his life, always blaming his ex wife, his grown up children and even the customers that came into the shop we worked at. Through every one of his actions and through every word that came out of his mouth he was dripping with self hate and everyone could see it but him. It was sad to see because nobody thought he was a bad person but his experiences in life had obviously driven him to the point of almost constant self hate. I don’t think he was always like this since I had heard he was once a very successful salesman but not long after I started working at this job, he had a car accident after a big drinking session one night and I never saw him again. Although I hope he was ok, the entire sales team took a giant leap forward soon after he left and the overall productivity of this branch of the company increased significantly.

Some people call television, the idiot box but it could also be called the hate box since the TV supplies an almost constant stream of hate. If you watch a lot of TV, there would probably be a good chance you are also brimming with self hate and may not even be aware of it. TV programs, especially the news media are propagating self hate on a global scale. On TV you are subjected to so much judgment of others that you subconsciously begin to think that judgment is ok. Since most people watch the news in the mistaken belief that they need to know what is going on in the world and they think they are doing themselves a favor by remaining up to date on current affairs, they ultimately fall prey to the fear mongering media and breed more self hate.

Where do you think terrorism came from? Perhaps you think it was started by some extremist group and grew from there. Well in some small way you could be right but not exactly. It may have manifested in the form of an extremist group but it originated from the mass media. The mass media has pushed us down, drowned our subconscious minds with fear and defiled the global collective consciousness of the entire planet to the point where we are all literally bursting with self hate. The scariest and most unnerving fact is it seems like we have come to accept it as a part of life. We can however, and we will but it will take some time, perhaps many years, overcome this oppressive wave of self hate.

We need to turn off the television, starting with the news programs and avoid other programs that encourage judgment of others. As we spend more time away from judgment we will begin to judge less and less and finally we will project self love instead of self hate. When someone shows you love you feel better about them and yourself since love breeds a loving feeling inside. We all know what hate breeds and do we really want to live in a world of hate when we could choose love instead?

No matter what it is you want to do or achieve in life, practice makes perfect. The more we all practice projecting love instead of hate, the more perfect our world will become.
