Personal Development New Year Checklist
January 1st, 2007The following personal development New Year checklist generally covers some of the things that I feel are important to be aware of everyday and by doing so should help make your quality of life that much better. Personal development covers so many areas of life it would be difficult to address each one but I will mention the issues that are important to me and hopefully we will find some common ground in regards what is important to you also.
Exercise everyday. Everyday might seem like a bit of a stretch for some people but it is perhaps one of the best habits you can get into. If you just cannot find the time to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day, try and do it at least every other day. You don’t need to hit the gym for a mind and body blowing session every time you exercise or run a marathon but get your body moving and your blood pumping on a regular basis. Ideally, one hour per day doing whatever exercise you like to do would be enough. By doing this, you are giving yourself the best chance of being physically and mentally healthy.
Eat well most of the time. By eating a healthy diet on a regular basis, just like exercising, you allow yourself to live up to your potential. A healthy diet makes for a healthy body and your body is your primary vehicle, it goes every where you go. Your body is intrinsically linked to your self confidence, so when you feel good about yourself, you feel much better about your life. The same goes for your mind, a healthy diet allows you to keep a clear head, stay focused and be more productive. If you eat well most of the time it doesn’t hurt to splurge every now and then on your favorite treats and you deserve it. Read something that inspires you every week. This can be anything from a biography of someone you admire to your favorite personal development material. If it makes you feel good, broadens your mind and has a positive impact on your life and those around you, that’s what I’m talking about.
Travel to somewhere you have never been before. At least once every year I think it’s necessary to step out of your comfort zone and experience a new location. If you can afford to or have the time to travel internationally that’s even better but not necessary. Go somewhere you have always wanted to go even if it’s still within your own state or even in your own city, it’ll make you feel good within yourself when you do it. When you get there, talk to the people who live there, it’s the best way to really get a feel for the place and who knows you might even find a new friend or want to spend some more time there in the future. Set a new goal at the beginning of each month. It doesn’t need to be a goal to change the world, although that would certainly be an admirable one, but make it a goal that will in some way change your world for the better. Even if it’s something like putting the rubbish outside every morning or making the bed before work, by starting with the smaller goals you can then work towards the bigger goals like changing the world.
Save more money. I’m not saying hoard your money and don’t spend it, what I am saying is save a little bit more than you did last year. If you normally don’t save any, try by starting to save even the smallest amount like a dollar a day and work from there. Saving money gets addictive once you start accumulating it but do yourself a favor and spend a little as you go as a reward for saving. A good tip someone once told me was to save 10% of your income every month. Some months you might earn more than others but if you can always save at least 10% you will always be moving forward and it’s a great habit to get into. The sooner you start the better. Help others. It doesn’t need to be everyday or even every week but when you can see that someone needs a helping hand and you have the time, offer your help. By doing this you will create a wave of positive energy that will be sent out into the universe gathering more energy and come back to you when you need help. From the universal law of cause and effect, what you give is what you get. Besides, helping others will make you feel good about yourself and what can be better than that?
Avoid the news media. You don’t need to know how many people got killed today in a far away country or the statistics of how many people in your town will develop bowel cancer this year. Media is an addiction, it does more harm than good. When you habitually read the newspapers and watch the news on TV your subconscious mind absorbs this information whether you are aware of it or not and can use it against you by manifesting thoughts of fear. These thoughts have the potential to cause you pain and suffering as the fear manifests as a belief in your mind and in turn forms an illness within your body. Don’t judge or compare yourself to others. Who cares what Tom Cruise or Brittany Spears is doing today, I’m sure they are fine people and be happy for them but you are not them, you are you and you are unique just like everyone else. Make the most of your life, live up to your potential, you can’t change who you are but you can improve. Everyone in this world has lived through a different set of experiences and because of this we all have a different perspective on life. Different experiences cause people to perform different actions, sometimes these actions may not seem right but it’s not our place to judge others. Your challenge is to be the best and happiest you can be and achieving that is the ultimate in success.
I’ve tried to cover some of the important topics that come up in daily life and in the quest for personal development. With the beginning of each new year I like to get off on the right foot and hope to make this year even better than the last one. Personal development is a never ending process of learning and the more knowledge we gather along the way, the better equipped we are to make wise decisions on our journey through life.
