Obsession with Celebrity

March 22nd, 2008

It seems every day the worldwide obsession with celebrity grows stronger and stronger. Gossip magazine sales are off the charts and paparazzi photographs sometimes sell for millions of dollars. Why is this? Are people so unhappy with their own lives they need to obsess over the lives of the rich and famous? Perhaps a huge chunk of the population is simply bored with their day to day existence and therefore finds some sort of comfort by watching the rise and fall of celebrities. To think about this obsession with celebrity is kind of depressing. Surely there must be something better to do.

Let us take a look at two similar yet different people.

Jenny buys all the latest gossip magazines and knows what celebrities are doing, where celebrities are going, what celebrities are wearing, who celebrities are sleeping with, which celebrities have drug problems, why some celebrities are angry and why some are happy and the list goes on and on and on. Jenny also watches the latest happenings in the lives of celebrities on television and tunes into the latest celebrity gossip on the radio when she is driving her car. All in all, celebrity obsession consumes a huge chunk of Jennys life and costs her a fair proportion of her income.

All said and done, Jenny cannot use any of her vast celebrity knowledge to improve the quality of her life or use this time committed to celebrity obsession to create any type of financial abundance. It is unclear whether Jenny could use what she knows about the lives of celebrities to strengthen her own relationships or form any new relationships. One thing that is certainly clearer, while Jenny compares her life to the lives of the rich and famous, it will unlikely make her feel good about herself or improve her own self worth.

So why do people like Jenny obsess with celebrity? I do not know but if you are like Jenny, this article might give you reason to rethink your obsession with celebrity and enable you to refocus your attention on what is most important in your life.

Samantha likes movies and likes listening to music, she knows who the big celebrities are but she spends none of her time or money reading about or watching celebrities. Samantha has a similar level of education to Jenny but likes to spend her spare time involved in sporting activities and spend time with her family and friends. She spends more time reading than watching television when she is not working. Samantha is committed to her relationships and enjoys learning more about life through her own experiences with people.

Most of the time Samantha concentrates on improving her life and working towards happiness without comparing herself to the rich and famous. She takes action to make forward progress but she still takes time out to dream.

Now who is the better person, Jenny or Samantha? Of course neither is any better than the other one. Both Jenny and Samantha want the same thing out of life and that is happiness. I am not saying you cannot be happy having an obsession with celebrity but what I am saying is that this obsession will unlikely lead you to a state of satisfaction or to any rewards. We each only have so much time in this life and what we do with that time is directly related to the level of happiness we achieve.
