Never Give Up

April 8th, 2007

There is certainly something to be said about persistence, without it you will never get anywhere. If you want something and you never give up there is a pretty good chance over the course of your entire lifetime you will get what it is you want. Maybe we come back in another life after this one but in this life you only have one chance to do what it is that you are truly passionate about. I do not know about you but from my perspective I really admire people who never give up. They may not always be the most successful people financially but they have a magic drive and attitude that far supercedes whatever can be gained from material wealth.

I guess the more I have become interested in spirituality and personal development the more I realize I should be spending my days doing exactly what it is that I want to be doing and not what I simply have to do to make money. We all need to make money and sometimes we may need to do work that we really do not want to do, I know I have at certain times in my life. However, we can always be working towards another primary goal. That goal I am referring to is your dream job which will allow you to lead your dream life. For some people it will always, sadly, only ever be a dream. For the people who never give up, that dream often becomes their reality.

One of my dreams has always been to travel. I have been fortunate enough to travel internationally on quite a number of occasions but 2 years ago I made the decision to leave my country Australia and move to Thailand. While I have been living and working in Thailand doing a job that I love to do I have managed to travel extensively throughout South East Asia and am heading to Malaysia next month which is a country I have never been to before. I have done so much traveling because I never gave up on the idea even at times when I did not have much money but somehow I always managed to find the money and go to a new place I had never been. When you never give up on your dreams you will always find the money, the people or the resources to help you get where it is you want to go. It is like the universe always finds a way to make your dreams come true when you never give up on the idea that you will get there one day and it does not matter what your dream is, with persistence it is just a matter of time.

My friend Conan Stevens and I met at Charlestown Gym in Australia 20 years ago when we were still in school and the whole time I have known him he has wanted to be an actor. He is not your everyday guy, standing 7 feet tall and weighing over 300 pounds Conan is a bodybuilder and wrestler and probably one of the biggest men you would ever see anywhere in the world. He never wanted to be the next Al Pacino but he has always wanted to be an action movie star and over the last 12 months he has finally realized his dream. Over the years Conan has done numerous jobs in between low paying acting jobs and has been down to his last dollar on too many occasions he cares to remember.

I am a pretty positive and motivated person but I must say over the last 20 years I have seriously wondered whether I would have given up if I was Conan, thinking maybe I was chasing an impossible dream and on many occasions we have spoken about this and every time he came back with the same answer, “no matter what happens I will never give up”. So after all these years of persistence Conan is finally there. He isn’t a household name yet but he has just finished and is working on a number of action movies being filmed in Asia at the moment. Bangkok Adrenaline is one movie that he starred in and also wrote the script for that will be released later this year and he has quite a few other movies under his belt like the title role in the Marvel Comics movie adaptation of Man Thing where he played a 7 foot tall swamp monster, now even Al Pacino could never have pulled off that role.

The point I am getting at is no matter how impossible it might seem to achieve your dream, never give up, never ever. You may have to do what Conan did and live almost on the poverty line at times but when you get there your success is going to be all that much sweeter. As far as I am concerned, the greatest sense of accomplishment comes when you have made a commitment with yourself to sacrifice everything if necessary to achieve your dream but maybe if you are dedicated and persistent enough you may not have to sacrifice so much to get where you want to be. In any case, if you are going to live why not live life on your terms instead of just being another statistic. It does not matter what your dream is it only matters that you live that dream

Hi John, Interesting views. I happened to your site by chance and read it all. Just when I was thinking I needed a break, I read your message and realise I have experienced most of what people only dream about. I am working a job that gives me quite a bit of liberty. I was reciently in Thailand myself for the second time. I am actually married to a beautiful Thai Woman. This makes my 17th country most of which was at the expence of the government. I will be moving to Thailand in about 5 years if I can beat this economy here in the USA. It’s a long story. Thanks fohe message and Talk with you soon……
