Milk Thistle and Silymarin

July 19th, 2007

Milk Thistle is a powerful herb that has a number of salubrious benefits for anyone living in the industrialized world. Silymarin is the active ingredient in the milk thistle seed which is of such assistance to the human body in so many ways. In my opinion milk thistle is as close to a magic drug as you could ever get and the great news is, it is not a drug, it is 100% natural. Milk thistle is perhaps the most effective solution to clean the liver of everything from alcohol to prescription drugs that are in many cases probably doing you more harm than good anyway.

The only place you can find silymarin is in the milk thistle seed. Silymarin has the ability to actually regenerate the liver even in cases of long term alcohol abuse and heavy drug use. Silymarin has an amazing two fold effect where by it not only cleans the liver but detoxifies even the weakest of livers at the same time. Even in cases where the liver has begun to harden from Cirrhosis or there is inflammation of the liver due to hepatitis, the silymarin present in the milk thistle seed has an incredible ability to regenerate a dirty liver.

The powerful milk thistle seed which is widely available in pill form from health food stores all over the world without prescription is also a wonderful preventative herbal medicine. As toxins arrive in the body from sources such as alcohol, drugs, prescription medicines or pesticides, silymarin actively promotes the flushing of these toxins from the liver while helping to detoxify the body at the same time.

Milk thistle’s potent silymarin compound is used today in the treatment of liver disease including hepatitis and cirrhosis like I mentioned earlier as well as helping to encourage bile flow naturally in patients with gall bladder disease. Since the liver can get bogged down easily when the body is saturated with the left over residues from living in a polluted environment as well as dealing with self induced toxins like alcohol and drugs, milk thistle has a positive effect on getting the liver moving in the right direction. The detoxifying effect silymarin has on the liver has also been seen to help individuals overcome chronic depression due to a stagnant liver.

Since milk thistle is such an effective liver cleaner this produces positive results for the skin since harmful toxins often build up in the blood that end up clogging the pores of the skin which cause skin conditions like acne and eczema. Patients with chronic skin conditions and irritations have reported significant improvements in the skin after treatment with silymarin.

Although milk thistle and the silymarin compound are as close to a magic weapon as you will ever get, in the fight against and the prevention of liver related health conditions, it is not a miracle cure that will allow you to abuse your body without consequence. Silymarin is however a potent herbal medicine we have at our disposal and something to consider before taking harmful chemicals to fix any medical condition. The standard adult silymarin dosage is 200mg 2-3 times per day before meals. As always consult your doctor before taking new medicine even if it is herbal just is case you happen to have some type of adverse reaction.
