If the Olympics were ever destined to be held in China, today would be the most auspicious of days for them to begin. With the number 8 thought to be the most fortuitous number amongst Chinese people, these Beijing Olympics are sure to be a success driven by the positive energy of over a billion Chinese countrymen. So for all the negativity we hear about China and I’m not saying some of it may not be warranted, I am personally looking forward to suspending any disapproval towards China and the actions of its government and plan to enjoy the spectacular sports and entertainment extravaganza that is the biggest showcase of sporting talent on Earth.
Chinese people love the number 8, it is a part of their culture and they have grown up with it. With the date today being 8/8/8 it surely represents a triple dose of luck and good fortune for all those who believe in the lucky charm of the number 8. I guess if you do not believe in the power of the figure 8 then today might just be another day. However, today does not feel like just another day since it is the beginning of another Olympics where we can put aside our differences between men and countries and battle it out in the relative safety of the sporting arena.
The Olympics is a lucky and special time, well at least for me anyway. Before I moved to live in Asia I used to live at Bondi Beach in Sydney Australia. I was living there during the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000. About 2 years before the Olympics were held in Sydney a petition was sent around Bondi Beach asking residents to oppose the building of the Olympic beach volleyball stadium on Bondi Beach. Many locals signed this petition trying to stop the stadium from being built although I was not one of them. Fast forward to when the Olympics were held in Sydney and the volleyball was played in the enormous stadium that was eventually built on Bondi Beach, it was one of the most electrifying and satisfying times in my life. Even most locals, who opposed the stadium initially, admitted it was one of the best things ever to happen to Bondi Beach during and after the Olympics. I loved living in the suburb of Bondi Beach for many years but those two weeks during the Olympics were the best times I ever had in Bondi and in Sydney for that matter. I felt lucky to be living in the city that was hosting the Olympics and fortunate to be alive.
I can empathize with the Chinese people in regards to how proud they must be feeling to be hosting the Olympic Games. On top of this they begin their Olympics on probably the luckiest day in a lifetime, or at least since this day 20 years ago. The number 8 is thought to display perfect symmetry as it flows with no beginning and no ending. Although the number 8 itself is pleasing to the eye in its symmetrical form, it is the powerful belief in this propitious number that prompts Chinese people to have it in their phone numbers, bank accounts, house numbers, license plates and so on.
Luck is one of those things you either believe in or not. I personally think you need to make your own luck but then again, perhaps some people are just born lucky. Whatever the case may be, if you believe in a positive outcome it has certainly got to be a better way to live than to believe in the opposite. I bet there is some luck and some love flowing in China today. Let the Games begin.
