Improve Your Memory

If you have ever had any problems with short term memory loss or long term memory loss it is usually related to a decrease in the flow of blood to your brain and this will happen as you get older. Short term memory loss is especially common with people who drink excessive amounts of alcohol, smoke cigarettes and regularly take prescription or recreational drugs. The memory loss in these cases is frequently caused by a loss of brain cells. Your brain cells will decrease over time, this is a natural part of life, but there is a way to help counteract dwindling brain cells and improve your memory and this is with the use of the leaf from the ginkgo tree.

Strangely enough a leaf from the ginkgo tree is roughly in the same shape as a human brain and in Asia is believed to be a kind of super brain food that will improve your memory and help in mental functions. The ginkgo tree dates back hundreds of millions of years and is the oldest of all species of trees. In Thailand where I currently live ginkgo is for sale almost everywhere and is used by Asian people not only for improving your memory but for the treatment of a number of other health conditions like boosting blood circulation throughout the organs of the body and to promote longevity.

In Asia ginkgo is commonly used in cooking traditional Asian dishes and can be found everywhere. The most widespread use of ginkgo in the Western world would have to be in herbs that can be found in health food stores and in ginkgo herbal teas. These herb supplements and herbal tea drinks are said to have a calming effect on the individual and help with clearer thinking. There is only one way to tell and that is to try it for yourself. Occasionally I do not mind having a cup or two of gingko herbal tea as it is so easily available here in Thailand but I usually have it on ice as it is just so hot here all year round.

It is not only advancing years that lead to a loss of memory. One of the most common causes of memory loss is due to a lack of sleep as this can lead to excessive tiredness, a lower level of concentration, anxiety and even depression. When you feel overly tired or depressed it is often hard to concentrate and therefore harder for you to remember sometimes the simplest things.

Although the use of gingko can help to improve your memory and assist in concentration it is wise to get around eight hours of sleep every night and more if you feel you need it or to catch up on sleep after a late night. Since we know that memory loss is attributed to a decrease in blood flow to the brain it is also wise to get your heart pumping every day with regular exercise. By exercising, you force blood through your entire body and brain and this helps to flush your blood with fresh oxygen and remove impurities that build up in your bloodstream from foods, water and pollution.

Along with gingko you could also benefit with vitamins B and C, fish oil and ginseng to help improve your memory and normal brain function. Memory loss is a part of life but with a healthy diet and a regular exercise regime of about 45 minutes to 1 hour per day you can help in turning back the clock and then you will more likely remember not only what you just did minutes ago but all those good times… and bad, that happened years ago.
