How To Make Money From Your New Blog

November 8th, 2006

There is so much conflicting information written about how to make money from your blog that for a new blogger the process can seem a bit overwhelming. Some say it’s easy to get started, some say it is a complicated process, some say to start your own blog you need a certain amount of programming knowledge, others say running a blog is fun but what I seem to have read most often is that whether it is easy or difficult to start or maintain a blog, it will take many months of writing before anyone comes to your site and even longer till you start making money from your blog. Is this really the case?

I am the first to admit that I am not an expert with computers and although I have had the internet at home for about seven years, I have not done much more than surf the web and email in that time. Up until recently I hadn’t even heard the term blog. A couple of months ago a friend of mine with a background in computers was telling me about a website he had built for himself. He said he had been building his site for quite a few months and had recently put Google Adsense onto the site and began to make money almost immediately. He knew I was an avid reader of personal development material and suggested I start up my own blog. I laughed at the idea and told him I have very little knowledge of computers and even less of an understanding of how to build a website. He insisted I needed no knowledge of computers and all I did need was a passion to write about any topic that interested me.

After a little bit of research online I decided to go for it and took his advice and opened up a Wordpress website after I spent $9 on a domain name. I made the decision to do this as a bit of fun. I’m happily employed in a full time job doing work I enjoy but also have enough free time to write a few articles each week. I am the fitness manager at a large sports club in Bangkok and am an experienced personal trainer so I decided to start a website based around the topic of success. This website gives me the opportunity to talk about success in health and fitness as well as all other areas related to personal development and the power of the mind, all of which have interested me for many years.

As I began to blog I read some positive information on blogging although I seemed to find much of the stuff written on the web was negative. A lot of what I read seemed to indicate you won’t make any money for about six months or more from starting out and to really start making money you will need to have all these computer skills that I don’t have. This is just not right. I have had my blog up now for just on two months and although I didn’t see any money in the first month, now I am seeing a small amount of money trickling in from Google Adsense everyday. Yes I have been learning more about the internet and yes I have needed to learn about Wordpress as I have been going along but I am still certainly no expert, not by a long shot and I have learned this knowledge without any help. So if you are just starting out with your new blog or are considering starting a blog, my advice would be to have no expectations and just dive right in even if all you know about computers is how to email. You will pick up all the necessary information you need as you go along.

If you have another source of income and have the time and the desire to start a blog, go for it. It’s so easy to set up using a simple and free Wordpress template, there is a heap of free material available on how to set up Google Adsense on your site and once you have it up and running all you have to do is write about what you like. If you have a particular interest that you are passionate about, there’s a good chance that throughout the entire planet of internet users there will be many others who share your passion and want to hear what you have to say. When they come to your site and they will if you write interesting and original content, some will click on your ads and by the mathematical law of probability, the more people who come, the more clicks you will get and the more money you will make. This has got to be the easiest way to make money I have ever heard of. For the tiny cost of a domain name and some of your free time you are giving yourself a great opportunity to make money and perhaps help others along the way if you have constructive advice or quality information to share. A belief in yourself and in the content you write goes a long way to. So don’t let others tell you that you can’t or won’t make money. Maybe that’s their fear and their reality but it certainly doesn’t need to be anything for you to fear if you just stick with it. With enough good content the money will begin to roll in.

I haven’t done any type of advertising and other than my friend who gave me the idea in the first place I haven’t told anyone else I know about my website as I just wanted to see how it would perform. One thing I have recently done is submit a few of my articles to blog carnivals and that has definitely increased my daily traffic but I had been getting visitors and making money even before I submitted to any blog carnivals. Only now am I starting to become aware of other possibilities for increasing my traffic but most of all I love being a part of the creative process and look forward to writing about the things that interest me. Everyday now I am finding inspiration from my daily life and through my interaction with others and have no shortage of subjects to write about that revolve around all types of success.

Although my blogging income is only still small at this stage, I am making money everyday and am seeing an increase in my traffic on a daily basis. Blogging is like anything else, the more you practice the better you get at it. I believe with a little bit of initiative and a regular or at least weekly commitment to writing new content you will see results. The great thing for me is I don’t need to spend copious amounts of time learning new computer skills, you will learn more as you go along though, and I can focus my energy on learning more about my topic of interest which is success. So to all of the new bloggers out there like me, I wish you a Universe of Success.
