Hate Your Job?

January 6th, 2007

If you hate your job you have one of two choices, stay there and remain miserable or move on. Although it may seem romantic or adventurous in a “Hollywood” kind of way to walk into your current place of employment and tell your boss what you really think of him and walk out with no other job to go to or a concrete plan, in real life however this is just plain dumb. If you want to quit that’s fine but get organized before you do it, don’t do it on the spur of the moment and definitely don’t throw in the towel because you are having a bad day. Always make big decisions with a clear head, not when you are feeling stressed out. My dad told me this when I was a kid and when my mind was wandering all over the place but it wasn’t till I was a bit older and wiser that I realized he was right. Today whenever I make any decisions that affect the course of my life I always make sure my mind is clear and I feel deep down that I’m doing the right thing. Things may not always work out but you have a better chance of success if you act only when your head is in the right place.

Having another job to go to is an easy way out but if you don’t you need to access what it is about your current job that you hate and what it is you want from your next job. When making a plan I do think you can allow yourself to drift with your imagination for a while and see what comes up. There is certainly no hard and fast rule that says you must continue doing something similar to what you have been doing recently or even for many years. You may even come up with some weird and wonderful ideas you had never dreamed of when you think outside the box. Doing this could be fun and you might even want to ask your friends or family for suggestions. There is no need to put any geographic limits on your possibilities either, even if you had previously never considered moving away from your home town, state or country before. Your options are as wide and diverse as your imagination will allow and if you have the money or can save up the money by staying at your current job a while longer, an international move could be just the ticket to get you out of a job you hate into a new job and life you love. There are no guarantees but if you never go you will never know.

I’m an Australian living in Thailand but when I look at the world and consider my international options I consider the rest of the world from the point of view as Australia being the centre of my world and look out from there. I did this when I made my decision to move to Thailand. If you are American, English or Norwegian for example you would probably look out at your options from the perspective of those countries being the centre of your world. For me when I made my decision to leave Australia to work and live in another country, I wanted to go somewhere totally different so I didn’t choose to go to New Zealand, which although still different, it didn’t seem like it would represent the kind of change I wanted to experience. In any case the world is your oyster and it is up to you to decide where you want to be. Moving to a nearby town could be just as fantastic as a move overseas if you can find what it is you want to do.

When you have your plan worked out and enough money saved up, don’t keep saving forever or you’ll never go, set a date to leave your job and do what you plan to do. Hesitating at that final moment and staying in a job you hate is only fear inside your mind. So don’t worry about this, everyone feels a bit afraid when facing something new, it’s healthy to feel this way. By facing that fear and leaving on schedule will not only be liberating but the confidence you gain from having the courage to do what you say you will do will overflow into that new move, whether it be around the corner or around the world. If you hate your job only you can do something about it and the change you make could change your life.
