Habits of Thought
November 19th, 2008We all have moments day to day or week to week where we encounter passing inspirations of thought. These potentially brilliant ideas some times come as a momentary bolt of lightning and give rise to all manner of future possibilities for our lives. If we act on these inspirations we have the power to change our lives, but sadly these dazzling ideas often pass through our minds as quickly as they appeared and our lives continue along the same path, whatever that may be. Our habits of thought however, create the solid reality we live in, whether that is a happy reality or a sad one is determined entirely by our habitual thinking.
Our habits of thought are like a mental magnet or vortex we live within constantly. In the vortex created by our habitual thinking we draw to us all the conditions we live in and the types of people we must deal with and interact with in every area of our lives. No condition or circumstance or person comes into our life by accident. Your habits of thought attract every event that has happened in your life and every single individual you have ever met.
Do not like the circumstances of your life? Not altogether happy with the people in your life? You made those circumstances happen, all of them and you are responsible for the people you work, live and associate with. You have the power to change this.
Negative habits of thought attract you to materially minded people and by association with these types of people it is pretty much inevitable that you will be drawn into unfavorable situations. You may not want to be where you are but lazy or sloppy thinking patterns will catapult you into less than favorable environments.
To move away from a bad habit or expel it once and for all you need to weaken the roots of that habit by avoiding all thoughts or actions associated with it without concentrating your thoughts on avoiding it. The best way to do this is to simply and easily focus your mind on a good habit. If you find it difficult to calm or control your mind, keep a piece of colored cloth or handkerchief in your pocket that you can grab at any time to remind you of that positive thought that your mind can quickly turn to when your habitual thinking turns to the negative. Keep thinking about that positive thought until it becomes a habitual thought in your mind.
There will always be two voices inside your head. Maybe you could call them good and evil. It is up to you to distinguish the good from the bad. You will usually know intuitively which voice will lead you in the most favorable direction. In my experience the evil voice often gives you the easy way out. However, by listening to and following the good voice inside your head, you may have more work to do but in the long run, you will encounter the events and people that will make your reality that much more rewarding and fulfilling.
