Guest Article: The Owning Your Home Dream

July 12th, 2007

Home is where the heart is and owning your home is a dream come true for most people. For the majority of people, life is spent moving from home to the office or place of work and then back home again on an almost daily basis. In many cases, the condition and interior decoration of someone’s office is not something they can decide about. I mean, you can’t go to work one day with a paintbrush and a pot of paint and start painting flowers on your desk. Your boss would probably call you a hippie and either sack you or send you to a clinic. However, your home is something that you can create and sculpt into the little oasis that we all need in our lives. Of course you need to buy the property first.

Most people say that buying a home is one of the most stressful things in one’s life. Actually that is not correct, buying the home is great fun, but the moving part is certainly a hassle. Although owning your own home is a dream almost everyone wants to come true.

I am currently in the process of buying a house in Bangkok. I say currently, as I’m still waiting for the mortgage to be approved and this is stressful indeed. I have chosen a house already, located about 15 km from the city centre. This for most people is like… where? In the jungle? For some reason most people living in Bangkok think that this 15 km is a long way, but being located next to a main motorway route makes access very easy indeed. Furthermore, the new elevated train link to the new Bangkok International airport is currently being built and one of the stations is literally on my doorstep (but far enough away not to be too noisy).

I am exited about this purchase for 2 reasons. Firstly and less significantly is because I know that the completion of the new elevated train route will increase the value of my house and my wealth will increase, but is money everything?

The second reason and the main one is because this house “in the jungle” is literally surrounded by green, which is something you do not see very often in the city. There are butterflies flying around, a nice breeze that actually smells like grass and not carbon monoxide and my own private garden. Having lived in Bangkok for nearly 7 years now I am sick of the congestion, having to wash my face 4 times a day and all the crazy drivers.

This is my first ever house and since I have always previously rented I have not been too concerned with the condition of things. In the house I am currently renting, the bathrooms are covered in mould and the floorboards are all rotten.

Owning your home is not just about the dream since owning real estate plays a significant part in ones sense of wellbeing. We spend enough of our lives working hard so we can have our own home, to stand back every now and then and think all that hard work has paid off and now the dream is a reality.
