Give Up Your Mobile Phone

November 28th, 2011

Mobile phones are everywhere and I mean everywhere. They are being used in just about every corner of the globe as signal stations continue to pop up all over the place to allow for greater coverage. Now with the advent of smart phones or android phones, the internet can now be accessed just about anywhere mobile phone coverage is available. Although mobile phones are definitely an advantage in modern life, are they necessary items, all day everyday?

I bought my first mobile phone in the mid nineties, it was one of those brick style bulky phones and it only worked every now and then since mobile coverage back them was irregular at best. That phone was quickly replaced by a smaller, more compact model and as time passed I used my mobile phone more and more.

In 2001 I lost my mobile phone one evening and after a couple weeks without it, I realized my life seemed just that little bit less stressed out and I went on till 2005 without a mobile phone. Between that period from 2001 to 2005 I think some people considered me a little weird not having a mobile phone but nowadays you would be considered almost a total misfit without one. I remembered someone asking me once if I was living in the 21st century or not during my stint without a mobile phone.

Although everyone does carry around a mobile phone these days and there are many important reasons to stay connected with family, friends and of course for work reasons, what about giving up your mobile phone for short periods of time. One day per week for the last few weeks I have turned off my mobile phone for the entire day, not on a work day, and what a liberating feeling it is.

In a world where we are just so connected all the time, it is a great relief, even if for just one day at a time, to disconnect from the rest of the planet and fly solo like in the olden days. It is such a good feeling I am looking at ways to disconnect more often but in these modern times it is easier said than done.
