Don’t Be Afraid to Change Your Plans

August 2nd, 2007

As life rolls on and we move from one experience to the next we pick up new ideas and dreams along the way. Moving through experiences and dealing with new situations as they arrive in our lives leaves it mark on our feelings and emotions and this has the effect of causing us to evaluate where we are heading. Our dreams and our goals change with the passage of time just as our physical bodies age year after year. For this reason you should never be afraid to change your plans or goals as you change. Changing your plans and goals might not seem like a big deal to some but for others it can cause much frustration.

As children we begin to formulate our initial dreams and plans through our early experiences in life. We may have dreams of becoming explorers, medical pioneers, famous movie stars or perhaps school teachers or parents. Each of us has a unique dream we would like to realize as we mature and everyone has their own idea of how that dream should materialize but what happens when that dream no longer matters?

When I was growing up I had a number of dreams and goals I wanted to achieve in my life once I left school and I managed to realize some of those goals but some I did not. A couple of my dreams since childhood seemed to be slipping through my fingers as I got older and this caused me a good deal of anguish. However, I wondered why although some of my dreams seemed to be slipping away from me I still was in no hurry to take action to achieve these old goals I had since I was a kid. The more I thought about it the more it made sense.

These old dreams of mine were no longer what I wanted out of life, I had been through my own set of unique experiences in life like everyone else must go through and these were not goals I had any desire to achieve anymore and it was for no other reason than because I had changed. Somewhere along the way I had changed but since I had been holding onto these dreams from when I was a kid I had a lot of difficulty letting go of them. Why did I have so much trouble letting go of these dreams? I can only say that I thought to myself that if I didn’t realize these dreams I would be a failure and my life wouldn’t mean anything. However, this was not the case. Since I had changed, my life had taken on a new meaning and through all the events I had experienced since I made those goals as a kid, I had set myself new and more meaningful goals. The simple truth was that those old goals were no longer my dreams and I had to let them go since I was never going to reach them because I just didn’t want them anymore.

It is hard at first to let go of old dreams but don’t be afraid to change your plans if you have evolved into someone who wants something else. Sometimes a single event in a person’s life can be the catalyst to significantly change their goals or plans for life seemingly overnight. For others it might be a series or events or circumstances over many years that force them to re-evaluate their dreams. Everyone’s circumstances are different and some people may even have the same dreams for life but whatever the case may be you should never be afraid to change your dreams or plans when you realize you now want something else. It does not matter what others think it only matters that you follow the goals and dreams that you feel are necessary and worthwhile to you since your happiness and sense of self worth depends on it.

Great post, when I read it I was reminded of some of the goals I had in the past that fell through the cracks for one reason or another. That’s all right, though, as I held onto the major goals that make all the difference to me. :P
