Does Your Life Need A Kickstart?

November 11th, 2006

If you ever find yourself hoping that something exciting will suddenly happen in your life you may be in need of a kickstart. Almost everybody at some stage in their lives gets caught up in the often mundane processes of daily life. This can quickly cause you to get caught in a rut and if you are not careful, this boring little rut can become a chronic problem and in the worst of cases can lead to a bout of depression. So if this happens to you I think it’s best to jump on it as soon as possible and you may find this little problem can be fixed as quickly as it begun.

Whenever this happens in my own life, and sometimes it just seems to happen when everything is going along fine, I automatically take a long hard look at my daily and weekly routine. Maybe I will find I have been spending too much time at work, trying to do too much on the weekends and not getting enough rest. If I spend a lot of time at night on the computer sometimes I may not get as much sleep as I need each day. It is things like these that can lead you to feeling down. Getting caught in a rut can happen for so many possible reasons and often it can come about due to the simplest of things or even a combination of small things.

The best solution I find to deal with this problem is to take some time out from my usual schedule and try something new or perhaps try something old. Do something you haven’t done for a long time that you know you enjoy. I live in a big and overpopulated city and find that whenever I get a chance to get out of this giant concrete jungle and into nature for even just one day, my batteries get a chance to recharge and I look forward to getting back to my usual routine. Getting out of town for a day or so might do the trick if you have just been feeling a little stressed out but if you have really been under pressure you may need to do something more to get back on track.

Another thing I like to do especially if I don’t have any time to get away is to set myself up with a new challenge or goal. It’s best to choose a goal that is not too time consuming and you can easily fit it into your daily or weekly schedule without too much fuss. Also, whatever it is you plan to achieve, make it worthwhile enough so that the accomplishment of this goal will give you a real sense of satisfaction. This way you will more likely stick with it till you have achieved it and often this will be enough to break the daily rut and back feeling good about your life.

A couple of examples of some easily implemented goals would be to incorporate some exercise into your life, especially if you are currently not doing any. Even a 45 minute brisk walk every second day would not only make you feel better by getting your body moving and your heart pounding, it will get you out of the house, office or where ever you would normally be.

You could sign up for a two or three hour class at a community learning center. Most towns have these and the courses on offer can be related to all manner of things. I took a two hour writing class at a local learning center just before I left Sydney and moved to Bangkok. It was held at a number of different times in the day to accommodate people who worked at different times. The course ran for ten weeks and I really looked forward to each writing class as it was something different from my usual routine and I met a group of interesting people. The other good thing about taking a class is learning a new skill which may in the long run improve your quality of life.

The list of new things to do to kickstart your life is endless. You may have a partner who you need to spend some more quality time with, what better way to get your relationship back on track than trying something new together. The important thing to do when trying to get out of a rut is to break the monotony of your usual routine. It is usually from doing the same old thing month in month out that got you caught in a rut in the first place. It’s often amazing where trying new things can eventually lead to.
