Dealing with Anxiety
June 4th, 2007You are feeling anxious because something just does not feel right but it is not your surroundings that are making you feel anxious it is the feelings within your subconscious mind. Dealing with anxiety comes from within, never from the situation at hand. For this reason dealing with anxiety in the most appropriate way means to get in tune with the present moment only. The more you think about what has happened in the past or what might happen in the future the more anxious you will become. Anxiety is an inner fear that manifests in your mind over time and shows its ugly head when you feel stressed.
You could become anxious at any moment and when the fear sets in you may feel a flood of uncomfortable emotions that may in the worst cases paralyze you. When you begin dealing with anxiety you come to understand that those bursts of anxiety that lead to an overwhelming fear are nothing but an illusion in your mind. The fear itself has no power over you since it does not exist in any tangible way or within any situation, it is just your mind playing tricks on you from fears that have become embedded in your subconscious mind from past experiences.
So what is the best plan of attack in regards dealing with anxiety? Step away from the fearful thoughts in your head and step into your present moment. You can deal with anxiety by immediately taking stock of where you are and what is happening around you. In most cases when you take a few deep breaths and make a positive affirmation to yourself like Everything is ok, and keep repeating it to yourself while you continue to breathe deeply you will begin to feel more in control of the moment and your fear. The deep breaths are essential in dealing with anxiety as they will increase the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream and allow you to think more clearly.
Affirmations are a great way to help you in dealing with anxiety as the words you repeat to yourself not only have a calming effect on your mind and thoughts but they bring you back into the moment and let you see that it is only an anxiety attack you are having and you will survive this temporary episode and there is really nothing to worry about.
In the worst possible cases if you have an anxiety attack and your attempts at dealing with anxiety fail you can keep breathing and walk away from your current situation. If you happen to be at work, with people or busy performing a task, well too bad, just walk away. You do not have to worry about what anyone else thinks and you certainly do not have anything to be ashamed of or need to explain yourself to anyone. If you walk away try to stop thinking about what is making you feel anxious and have a pre planned thought in your mind to replace the anxious or fearful thought. Maybe a pre planned thought might be playing with your kids, your pet or sitting in your safe place at home. This security thought can be any thought that makes you feel happy and not anxious.
The thing about dealing with anxiety often is that once you have overcome the anxious moment you will usually look back at that moment with a clear head and wonder what on earth you were all worked up about. In any case do not be too hard on yourself. As you become better equipped at dealing with anxiety you may find in the long run your anxiety attacks come by less frequently and when they do you know what you need to do.
