Beware The Power Of Suggestion

October 28th, 2006

The job of your conscious mind, in a way, is to act as a guard at the doorway to your subconscious mind. Since your subconscious is irrational and does not have the power to reason the good from the bad, it simply accepts whatever information it is given and then begins to execute it. The power of suggestion is such a tremendous force that it is imperative that your conscious mind filters all the information it receives for as soon as your conscious mind accepts an idea, the subconscious begins to act.

The power of suggestion works differently on different people. Imagine a learner driver is traveling along the highway when his passenger says to him, “hey you look really tired, you better pull over and get some rest or you are going to have an accident.” This suggestion would most likely lead him to stop the car immediately and take a break due to the fear of possibly having a crash. If however you made this same suggestion to an experienced interstate truck driver it would likely have no effect on him, he would most likely laugh it off since he is so experienced in what he is doing.

In the previous example you can see how the same suggestion caused two totally different reactions from different people. This is because your conscious mind is in control, it has the power to accept or reject any suggestion imposed on it. The learner driver felt instant thoughts of fear when the suggestion was made to him, he accepted the suggestion consciously and in turn subconsciously due to his inexperience as a driver, so beware the power of suggestion, it’s an extremely powerful force. The truck driver on the other hand felt no fear since he is very experienced and therefore due to his confidence as a driver the suggestion had no power over him.

Many years ago when I was still in school a friend of mines mother discovered a lump on her neck. She promptly went to the doctor who ran some tests and when the results came back he gave her some very bad news. He said to her the lump on her neck was cancerous and she only had 12 months to live. The poor woman, not being aware of the tremendous power of the mind and therefore susceptible to the power of suggestion, believed what the doctor had told her and she died 11 ½ months later. At the time I was also not aware of the vast power of the mind or the power of suggestion and was shocked when she died at almost the exact time the doctor had said she would.

Some years later my grandfather was diagnosed with leukemia and his doctor told him he only had 5 years to live. Fortunately my grandfather was aware of the power of his mind and refused to believe what the doctor had told him. The 5 year point came and went and he still felt in good health because he believed he was. He did die 11 years later but from something unrelated. This was the first concrete example in my life of how powerful the mind is if you believe.

Remember belief is only a thought in your mind. You have the power to choose your own thoughts and therefore decide what you believe. There is no power of suggestion if you don’t believe the suggestion. Although, if you truly believe something on a conscious level your subconscious will act according to your belief and it will manifest in your experience. Your beliefs and fears govern your life. So when someone makes a suggestion you should know that the suggestion itself has no power in it. It is only you who can give it the power by believing it and only then will your subconscious take control and make it so.

Came across your site while browsing through the entries for the carnival of healing, and I must say it’s quite informative.

I wish it could be said more profoundly so that more people would pay attention: YOUR MIND IS EVERYTHING — through your mind, you can heal yourself or kill yourself, make yourself wealthy or poor, happy or miserable. It all depends on how you use it (or even IF you use it…)

Maybe if enough people like you can continue to get the message out, people will begin to pay attention.

I believe this is true. A couple of times, before tests, I will have my kids turn to their neighbor and say, “Wow, you are so incredibly smart!”
I don’t know if it’s made any difference, but it certainly can’t have any negative effect.

This was so true. My special ed students have been told for so many years that they were stupid and lazy so how could they be expected to act differently. In my class, they had to write “I am a Born Winner!” on every paper they turned in. I expected a lot out of them and refused to hear any excuses and told them this. All of them rose to the occasion!
