Advantages of Stress

Although most people would understandably prefer to avoid stress, there are certain advantages of stress. We usually think of stress as something negative and rarely associate stress as being positive or a constructive means to an end. Perhaps without even being aware of it, almost everyone has used stress to their advantage on numerous occasions in their lives. When you change the way you look at stress you can use it in your favor.

When ever we face any new situation there are usually a number of different problems that crop up and these problems are often accompanied by stress. Stress is an unavoidable part of life and when we take a closer look at what stress does to us, it can be as good as it can be bad. How good or bad it is depends on how we deal with it.

The main advantage of stress is it makes us take action. It doesn’t matter what form the stress takes, it is always a signal for us to take action in a new direction. That new direction might not be radically different to our current course but never the less, it is still a warning sign that something is not right. I imagine it would be impossible to go through life without feeling the effects of stress and from my own experiences in life, stress seems to have a positive effect in the long run. It is only when you ignore the feelings of stress and refuse to take action that the stress becomes worse and can eventually become unbearable. If left unresolved, that unbearable stress can lead to your eventual demise and nobody wants that. For this reason, stress is your best early warning detection system that your life is off course.

You can use stress to your advantage in school by doing your homework and submitting it on time. You can let stress eat you up at school by avoiding your homework and not studying for exams and not only will you most probably perform poorly in your exams, you will get even more added stress from your parents and teachers. I’m sure everyone can relate to this.

The same thing goes in your professional and personal life as well. If your job or your workplace is causing you to be stressed out you need to seriously look at what areas of your job are causing you stress and address them, your stress will not abate until you take action, as hard as it might be to do. If your relationship is causing you undue levels of stress it is only you who can change it but remember the stress has appeared in your life because something is not right.

Of course it will probably always seem uncomfortable whenever any stress first appears in your life but when you realize the stress has only appeared as a warning signal you can make an immediate decision to deal with it. The more often you get in the habit of dealing with stress sooner rather than later, the less time you will spend stressed out and when you are feeling stress free you will know you are heading in the right direction.
