10 Reasons for Rewarding Yourself
July 24th, 2007When ever you set and than achieve your goals, rewarding yourself for reaching the goals should be as much a part of setting them in the first place. Although reaching your goals may be enough of a reward for some, often people set and achieve their goals without even stopping for a moment to rejoice in the accomplishment. Not celebrating your goal achievements over time can sometimes lead to an inability to set goals and work towards them since you never give yourself that much needed pat on the back.
I am not talking about rewarding yourself for every tiny little goal you set for yourself but I am referring to those goals that take a considerable amount of time and effort. Many great achievers through history have remarked in the later stages of their life how they never stopped to enjoy their accomplishments as they achieved their goals but simply kept working and working till some of them became old and bitter. Life is not just about goal achievement, it is about enjoying what you do and rewarding yourself for what you know is a job well done, even if nobody else ever knows about it.
The following is a list of reasons for rewarding yourself even if the only person who benefited directly from you reaching your goal was you.
- Rewarding yourself after giving up drinking and staying off it for long enough so that you know it is no longer a problem for you is something to be proud of. It takes a lot of mental discipline to permanently give up alcohol and rewarding yourself for this fine achievement is a necessity.
- Graduating from any form of educational institute is a remarkable achievement and is probably something others may reward you for but you need to reward yourself in some kind of personal way for completing this long term goal. It is in most cases, not about what you actually learnt form participating in the education, it is about finishing what you started.
- If you can give up cigarettes permanently, rewarding yourself for kicking this bad habit, not only improves the quality of your life but those around you as well.
- Getting and keeping a good job is something that can change your life in so many ways. It gives you the ability to achieve financial freedom, you learn to work with and along side others and it gives you a sense of purpose and direction. Anyone can get a job but getting it and keeping it by working well is something worth rewarding yourself for. You could use some of your earnings to take a well deserved holiday.
- By being a good parent it is unlikely anyone will ever reward you for all your hard work and persistence. Only you know if your effort is worth rewarding yourself for but in most cases the sacrifices a parent makes for their children is definitely worth something special every now and then.
- Successfully opening your own business in a world full of uncertainty is a monumental effort and if you have proven yourself to be a success, rewarding yourself is an absolute must.
- Regularly rewarding yourself for sticking to a healthy lifestyle of eating well and exercising consistently is perhaps the greatest reward in itself but giving yourself the opportunity to indulge in your favorite foods once a week or at least once or twice per month is a great reason to stick with your healthy lifestyle for life, not because you have to but because you want to.
- Anyone who has been in severe financial debt and managed to get out of debt and back on their own two feet by working hard and diligently has my utmost respect and those who manage to permanently stay out of debt and start to increase their own personal wealth definitely need to reward themselves in some way. This is a magnificent achievement since it is so easy to just give up and this is unfortunately what many people do.
- I have mentioned giving up alcohol and cigarettes separately but successfully overcoming a drug addiction is a monumental effort and is undoubtedly worth rewarding yourself for. There is such a social stigma associated with drugs and drug addicts which makes overcoming drug addiction exponentially more difficult when often people will give up on you and leave you to your own devices. If you can give up drugs and stay clean you are a winner in my book and you not only deserve to forgive yourself but you deserve a special reward that only you can give yourself as well.
- Giving up TV news, newspapers, news radio and all other news media is the single best investment you can make in your life and in the lives of the people around you. News media is the most destructive and debilitating force on this planet today, without exception. The only purpose behind the news is to spread fear, instill violence, invoke terrorism and make money through human torture and suffering. There is perhaps no reward great enough for managing to permanently give up news media. In the months to come I will explain further how the news media has a devastating effect on the subconscious mind in ways you could probably never have imagined.
